Teaching in Overleaf v2

Overleaf v2 will offer exciting new ways of teaching, through features such as the new track changes and commenting system, and the new chat panel (which allows for in-project conversations). You can already try these out for yourself in the beta of Overleaf v2, which is available here: https://v2.overleaf.com/

The way you manage assignments on Overleaf will change from v1 to v2. The current system for creating, submitting, and managing assignments was developed a number of years ago, before many of the newer Overleaf features, and as such it has a number of known limitations (for example, it’s currently very difficult to manage multiple classes). In addition, from your feedback on using teams on Overleaf, we know that many of you would appreciate the ability to more easily share templates privately within a group, whether for teaching or for more general group work.

We are thus taking the opportunity with Overleaf v2 to improve the way templates and assignments can be created and shared within groups and classes. These improvements are planned for launch in 2019; in the meantime, you can continue to use and manage your assignments on Overleaf v1, and use the new track changes and commenting features on Overleaf v2.

If you currently have a teaching team on Overleaf v1, you’ll be able to continue to use this as you do now on Overleaf v1 until the end of 2018. Students who are currently working on assignments will be able to complete and submit them on Overleaf v1, and you will still be able to access the submissions from the dashboard in Overleaf v1 in the usual way.

When Overleaf v1 is retired, we’ll make sure you still have access to the assignments that have been submitted. Although you won’t be able to create new assignments on Overleaf v2 (or receive any further submissions for assignments that were created on Overleaf v1), you will be able to make use of the new features such as the improved track changes and commenting options that are available on Overleaf v2 now, and look forward to the launch of the improved system for managing templates in groups due for release later in 2019.
